Dryer Runs But Never Gets Hot

If your dryer tumbles but won't heat, the cause is almost always airflow, a failed heat part, or a safety device that already tripped. It's one of the most common calls we take. The drum spins, you hear the motor, and forty minutes later the towels are still damp and cold. Here's how we work through it. Questions? Call us.

What "runs but no heat" actually tells us

When the drum turns, your motor and belt are fine, which rules out a lot. The problem sits in the heating circuit or in the air moving through it. Dryers heat air, push it through the clothes, then dump the moisture outside. Break any part of that chain and you get cool, damp laundry. Sometimes there's a little warmth but not enough, and that usually means restricted airflow. Sometimes there's none at all, which points to an electrical part in the heat circuit. Both feel the same to you standing at the laundry basket. They're different repairs, so we start by figuring out which one you've got.

Start with airflow, because it's the cheapest cause

Lint is the usual villain. It packs into the vent hose, the wall duct, and the flap outside. Trapped hot air makes the dryer overheat, and a safety thermostat shuts the heat off to protect the machine. The drum keeps spinning, so nothing looks broken. In Midwest basements we see long vent runs with several elbows, and those clog fast. Crushed flexible hose behind the dryer does the same thing. Clear the vent and heat often comes right back. If a dryer has been shutting off heat for months, the repeated overheating can damage parts, so fix it early.

Heating parts and safety devices

Electric dryers use a heating element. Gas dryers use a burner with an igniter and gas valve coils. Either can fail and leave you with a cold tumble. Alongside them sit a cycling thermostat and a thermal fuse. The fuse is a one-time part. When it blows, heat stops for good until somebody replaces it. A blown fuse is almost always a symptom rather than the root cause, so we go looking for the airflow problem behind it. Control boards and timers can also stop calling for heat. That's less common, but we check it before replacing parts.

Safe checks you can do right now

Pull the dryer out a foot and look at the vent hose. Is it kinked, crushed, or packed? Disconnect it at the wall if it slides off easily and reach in for lint. Then go outside and watch the vent hood while the dryer runs. You should feel a strong warm push. Weak or no airflow is your answer. Clean the lint screen and hold it under running water. If water beads instead of passing through, fabric softener film is blocking it. Check that the cycle isn't set to Air Fluff or Air Dry, which run with no heat at all. Stop there. Don't open panels or touch gas lines.

What we do differently on a service call

We meter the heating circuit instead of guessing. That means testing the element, thermostats, and thermal fuse for continuity, plus checking that the machine is getting full voltage. Electric dryers can lose one leg of power and still tumble without heating, which fools a lot of people. On gas units we watch the igniter glow and confirm the valve opens. We measure actual airflow too, and check duct length against what the dryer can handle. Then we replace what failed and fix the reason it failed, so the same part doesn't blow again next month. Call us and tell us what you're hearing.

Dryer Runs But Never Gets Hot — what people ask

Can a dryer heat again on its own after shutting down?

Yes. If a cycling thermostat tripped from overheating, it resets once things cool. You'll get heat, then lose it again. That on-and-off pattern is a strong hint that the vent is restricted.

Is it worth cleaning the vent if I'm calling anyway?

Go ahead and look. Leave the deep cleaning to us if the duct runs through walls or ceilings. We clear the full run and confirm airflow afterward, which tells us whether a part also failed.

Why do my clothes come out damp but warm?

Warm air with poor exhaust means the moisture stays in the drum. The heater works fine, the air just isn't leaving. Check the outside vent flap first for lint buildup or a stuck damper.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form and describe what you hear, smell, or see. An error code helps. So does a puddle. We ask the brand and rough age so the van carries the parts we are likely to need.

  2. Step 2

    We come look

Our technician tests the machine instead of guessing: water lines, heating elements, drain pumps, control boards. Then we explain what failed in plain words before any wrench turns.

  3. Step 3

    Repair and clean up

Common parts ride with us, so a lot of repairs finish on that first visit. Special-order parts get scheduled right away. We run the cycle with you standing there, then haul off the old part and the packaging.

Why homeowners call us

  • Hard water is our specialtyMidwest water leaves scale on everything it touches. Crusted dishwasher spray arms. Clogged ice maker lines, and washers and water heaters full of mineral buildup. We know what that grit does to valves and seals, so we treat the cause instead of the symptom.
  • Basement laundry roomsBasement setups fail differently than upstairs ones, between the long drain runs, the cold concrete, and lint packed into a vent that runs through the rim joist. We check the venting and the drain path too, not only the machine, so the same problem does not come back.
  • Freeze-thaw season readyGarage freezers quit in January. Ice makers stop when the supply line freezes, and dryers labor when the vent hood ices over. Seasonal swings break appliances in fairly predictable ways, and those are the first things we look at on a winter call.
  • Independent, all major brandsWe are not tied to any manufacturer, so we work on whatever is sitting in your kitchen or laundry room: refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers, washers, dryers, freezers. One shop, one call, whatever badge is on the door.
  • All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and the rest.
  • Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so, often right on the phone.
