What dirty dishes actually tell us
A dishwasher cleans with hot water sprayed hard through spinning arms, plus detergent that needs that heat to work. When dishes come out dirty, one of those things fell short: water, spray, or heat. The pattern of leftover food tells us a lot. If only the top rack is bad, we look at the upper spray arm and water pressure. Filmy, chalky dishes point us toward hard water and detergent, while gritty sludge redeposited on everything usually means the filter or drain. Notice the pattern before you call. It saves time on the phone.
Cause family one: loading, detergent, and water temperature
Start here, because it's free. Overloading is the most common thing we find. Big platters along the front block the spray from reaching the back, bowls nested together shield each other, and tall items on the bottom rack stop the upper arm from turning. Next, detergent. Old powder that's caked in the box has lost its punch. Where we work, hard water is common across the Midwest, and pods sometimes can't keep up with the mineral load. Try a fresh box and add rinse aid. Last thing: run the kitchen faucet hot before you start the cycle so the dishwasher fills warm from the first minute.
Cause family two: a clogged filter or spray arm
Pull the bottom rack out and look at the floor of the tub. Most dishwashers built in the last fifteen years have a cylinder filter that twists out. Ours come in caked with wet paper labels, seeds, and grease. Rinse it under the tap with dish soap and a soft brush. While it's out, spin both spray arms by hand. They should turn freely. Hold one up to the light and check the little holes, since hard-water scale and toothpick fragments plug them. A stiff wire or toothpick clears them from the outside. Reinstall the filter snugly, or you'll get grinding noises next cycle.
Cause family three: parts that have quit working
If the basics are clean and it still runs dirty, something mechanical is failing. A worn wash pump won't build pressure, so the arms barely dribble. A cracked spray arm bearing leaks water instead of spraying it. If the heating element isn't raising water temperature, detergent never dissolves and the dishes stay greasy. A stuck soap dispenser door means the pod sits in the bottom of the tub, unopened. And a partly blocked drain line leaves dirty water behind that gets sprayed onto the next load. These need testing and disassembly. That's our part.

We measure. We check the actual fill volume and the water temperature at the end of the fill, not just what the thermostat claims. We put a meter on the heating element and the pump windings. We pull the lower access and inspect the sump for glass chips, which shred pump seals. We check the drain hose loop too, because bad routing lets sink water siphon back in. Should I rinse dishes before loading them?
Scrape off solids, but don't rinse spotless. Modern detergent needs some soil to grab onto. Heavy scraping plus a clean filter does more good than pre-rinsing every plate under the faucet.
Why is there white film on my glassware?
That's usually mineral deposits from hard water, which we run into all over our service area. Add rinse aid, and run a citric-acid dishwasher cleaner monthly. If the film feels etched and permanent, the damage is already done.
Can a dishwasher clean if the hot water heater is set low?
Not well. Detergent needs hot water to dissolve and cut grease. If your water heater runs cool, the dishwasher's booster heater has to do all the work, and older ones often can't.
