What the minerals are actually doing in there
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Every time water gets heated or evaporates, those minerals stay behind as a chalky crust. In a dishwasher, the crust coats the heating element and clogs the tiny spray arm holes. In a water heater, it settles on the bottom as a layer of grit that the burner or element has to heat through. In a washer, it stiffens hoses and coats the valve screens. Nothing fails right away. Instead, parts run hotter and longer to do the same job. Heat is what kills components. That's the slow damage most homeowners never see coming.
The habit that prevents most of it
Descaling. That's it. Run a cup of white vinegar or a packet of citric-acid appliance cleaner through your dishwasher on the hottest cycle, with no dishes inside. Do the same for your coffee maker. For the washing machine, run a hot cleaning cycle with a washer tablet. While the dishwasher is empty and cool, pull the bottom rack and twist off the spray arm if it lifts free by hand. Rinse the holes under the faucet and poke stubborn ones with a toothpick. Wipe the door gasket. Also, check the filter basket in the tub floor. Most twist out with no tools.
How often, honestly
If your water leaves spots on glasses or a ring in the toilet tank, descale the dishwasher and coffee maker monthly. Softer water can stretch to every three months. Washing machine cleaning cycle: once a month if you use cold water and liquid detergent, since those leave more residue. Spray arms and filters: check every couple of months. Water heater flush: once a year, and in a lot of Midwest basements we'd say twice. Pick a date you'll remember, like the first of the month or when you change the furnace filter. The habit matters more than the calendar.
Signs prevention is already too late
Dishes come out gritty even after a fresh descale. The dishwasher runs a full cycle and the dishes are still cool and wet, which points to a heating element buried in scale. Your water heater rumbles or knocks when it fires, or hot water runs out sooner than it used to. A washer takes a long time to fill, or fills unevenly, hinting at blocked inlet screens. Faucet aerators plug up within weeks of cleaning. Any of these means the buildup has moved past what vinegar can dissolve. That's a service call, not a cleaning cycle. Can I use vinegar in any dishwasher?
Most handle it fine occasionally. Some manufacturers advise against it because acid can be hard on rubber seals over time. Check your owner's manual. A citric-acid appliance cleaner is a gentler option and works just as well on scale.
Does hard water damage the refrigerator too?
Mainly the water line, ice maker, and dispenser. Scale narrows the tubing and jams the ice maker's fill valve. Change the water filter on schedule and watch for hollow or cloudy ice cubes, which is an early hint.
My glasses are cloudy. Is that scale or something else?
Try rubbing a spot with vinegar on a cloth. If the film wipes away, it's mineral deposit and descaling plus rinse aid will help. If it stays, the glass itself is etched, which is permanent.
