One Cold Element on an Electric Cooktop
A single cold burner on an electric cooktop almost always comes down to the element, its socket, the switch behind the knob, or the control board, and a couple of those checks are safe for you to do before we come out. The odd part is how it looks from the outside: you turn the knob, the indicator light comes on, and nothing heats. Or the coil glows a minute, then quits partway through dinner while every other burner behaves. Here's how we sort it out.

What a dead element is actually telling you
An electric element is just a resistance wire. Power goes in, heat comes out. When one burner stops heating, the break is somewhere along that path: the element, the socket it plugs into, the switch behind the knob, or on a smooth top, the control board. The pattern matters. Never heats at all? Probably a break in the circuit. Heats and then drops out? Often a switch, or a loose connection expanding once it warms up. Glows dim and weak, and you may be looking at a partial failure or a voltage problem. Jot down what you saw before you call us. That one detail narrows things down fast.
Cause one: the element or its socket
On coil-style cooktops this is the common fix, and the cheap one. Coils plug into a receptacle under the trim ring, and spills run right down into it. In Midwest kitchens with hard water, mineral crust and boiled-over sugar bake onto the contacts until nothing conducts. Socket terminals arc too, leaving black pitting behind. Sometimes the coil itself blisters or splits, and you can see the bubble or the break in the metal sheath. Coils and receptacles are replaceable parts. On a smooth top the element sits under the glass, so there is nothing to inspect from above.
Cause two: the infinite switch behind the knob
That knob is not opening a valve. It runs an infinite switch that cycles power on and off to set your heat level, and switches wear out. The internal contacts pit, and one position eventually quits passing current. Clues: the burner works on high but not low, or it works when you jiggle the knob, or the light comes on and nothing heats. A failing switch can also stick on and run the burner full blast wherever you set it. That one is a safety problem. Shut the breaker off and leave the cooktop alone until somebody looks at it.
Cause three: power supply and control board
Electric cooktops run on 240 volts through a double breaker. Lose half that circuit and some burners work, others do not, and the oven may act strange as well. So check how many elements are affected. Rule out a tripped or half-tripped breaker while you are at it by flipping it fully off, then back on. On smooth tops with touch controls, the board that fires the elements can fail. You might get controls that beep and do nothing, a burner that ignores its setting, or an error code on the display. Board and relay work is not a homeowner job.
Safe checks you can do right now
Unplug the unit or shut off the breaker first. On a coil cooktop, let it cool, pull the coil straight out, and look at the two prongs and the socket for burn marks or crust. Reseat it firmly. Then swap a working coil of the same size into the dead spot. If it heats, the coil was bad. If it stays cold, the trouble is the socket or the switch. Wipe up spills around the trim ring and make sure the breaker is fully seated. Stop there. Don't pull the cooktop, unscrew the control panel, or probe any wiring. We pull the cooktop and test with a meter. That tells us if voltage is reaching the receptacle, if the element has continuity, and if the switch passes current at every setting. Guessing gets expensive in parts. Measuring doesn't. We also check the terminal block where the range cord lands, because a loose lug there heats up, discolors, and drops one leg of the 240. On glass tops we lift the surface to get at the radiant element and its wiring. Then we go looking for what caused the failure instead of only swapping the failed part, so you are not calling again next winter.

Can I keep using the other burners?
Usually yes, as long as the dead burner just sits there doing nothing. Quit using the cooktop entirely if you smell burning plastic, see arcing, or a burner runs full heat no matter where the knob is. Shut the breaker off in those cases.
Why does my burner heat up, then shut off?
If it comes back on, that is normal cycling. Infinite switches pulse power to hold a temperature. If it goes cold and stays cold, suspect a worn switch or a connection working loose as the metal expands with heat.
Is a cracked glass cooktop still safe to use?
No. Cracks let spills down into the wiring underneath, and heat can make the glass fail further. Turn off the breaker and have it looked at before you cook on it again.
