A Burner That Clicks But Never Lights
If a gas burner won't light, we repair the ignition and gas-side parts that cause it, and there are a couple of safe things you can check first. You turn the knob, you hear the hiss, then click, click, click and nothing catches. Or the clicking never starts. One burner can be dead while the other three light fine. It's annoying, and gas smells make anyone nervous. Here's how we tell spark problems from gas problems.

What the symptom is telling you
A gas burner needs gas at the port and a spark or flame to set it off, with a clear path for both. Miss any one of those and you get nothing. Listen first. Clicking with no flame usually means gas isn't reaching the igniter area, or the ports are blocked. No clicking at all points at the ignition side: the switch inside the knob, the spark module, or a wet igniter. If one burner is out and the rest work, the trouble is almost always local to that burner. If every burner is out, look at power to the range and the gas supply to the house. Either way, don't keep the knob open while it fails to light.
Cause one: a dirty or wet burner (the cheapest fix)
This is where we start, because it's the most common thing we find. Boil-overs leave sugar and starch in the tiny gas ports around the burner ring. Cleaning spray runs down into the igniter well. Hard water here in the Midwest leaves white scale that bakes on hard. A blocked port gives you a weak flame on one side, or flame that lights slowly and pops. A soaked igniter clicks but won't throw a good spark until it dries out. After a big spill or a deep clean, give the burner a few hours. Sometimes that alone solves it. If you've got clicking and you can hear gas hissing, dirt is the first suspect.
Cause two: ignition parts that have worn out
Next is the spark side. Electrode igniters crack after years of heat cycling. When the ceramic cracks, the spark jumps where it shouldn't, and you may see it arcing to the burner base instead of the gas port. The knob switch that tells the module to fire wears out too, which gives you gas and no click. A spark module that fires every burner at once, over and over, even with the knobs off, is another version of the same thing. That's a control problem, not a burner problem. These parts sit inside the appliance. Replacing them means pulling the cooktop and working near gas connections, so leave that to us.
Cause three: gas delivery and safety valves
If nothing on the range works and no other gas appliance in the house works either, call your gas utility, not us. If the range alone is dead, gas may be shut off at the appliance valve, or the range got moved recently and the connection is off. Sealed burner ranges have valves that meter gas by knob position. When those get gummy or quit, you get gas at some settings and not others. Lights on high, dies on low. On older ranges with standing pilots, a pilot that keeps blowing out points at a draft or a clogged pilot orifice. We handle any work involving gas lines, valves, or regulators. Never loosen a gas fitting yourself.
Safe checks you can do, and where we take over
Do this much. Turn off the burner and wait. Confirm the range is plugged in, because gas ranges still need power to spark, and check the breaker for the kitchen. Once the surface is cool, lift off the grate and the burner cap and look for crumbs or crusted spill on the ports. Wipe with a damp cloth and dry it well. Make sure the cap sits flat and centered. Stop there. If you smell gas at all, don't try to light anything. Leave, then call your utility from outside. Can I light the burner with a match while I wait?
Many gas ranges allow it, but only if the burner isn't leaking gas and you can light it right away. Don't let gas run first. If it doesn't catch in a second or two, shut the knob and stop.
Why do all my burners click at once?
Usually the spark module is getting a false signal, often from a wet or failed knob switch. Unplug the range to stop the clicking, then call us. Continuous sparking shouldn't be left running.
One burner has a weak yellow flame. Same problem?
Related. A yellow, lazy flame usually means blocked ports or a burner cap seated wrong, so the air and gas aren't mixing right. Clean it and reseat the cap. If it stays yellow, have us look at it.
