Gas Smell From the Stove or Oven
If your kitchen smells like rotten eggs or sulfur, shut off every burner, open a window, and call your gas utility if the smell is strong. Natural gas is odorized to smell that way on purpose, so a sulfur smell gets treated as gas until someone confirms otherwise. Maybe you notice it when the oven lights, maybe it's there all day. Do These Things First, In This Order
1. Stop and sniff. If the smell is strong, skip to step 5. 2. Turn every burner knob to off, and check that no knob is parked between settings. 3. Turn the oven off. If a pot boiled over onto a burner, what you smell may be gas that never ignited. 4. Open a window or two and the back door so air moves through. 5. If the smell is strong, sharp, or making you lightheaded, get everyone outside and call your gas utility from the yard. A faint smell that fades a minute after you shut the burners off is a different animal than one that keeps building. Trust the building smell.
What Not to Do
Don't flip light switches on or off. Don't unplug the range or hit a breaker in a room that smells like gas, because sparks are the whole problem. Leave the ceiling fan and the range hood fan alone too. No candles, no matches, and don't hold a lighter to a burner to see if it lights. Don't go sniffing along the gas line behind the range, and don't pull the range away from the wall. That flex connector back there is not something to tug on. Don't lift the bottom oven panel or pop off burner caps to poke around. And don't wait it out hoping it fades. Air the room out and get an answer.
When to Leave the House
Leave now if the smell is strong anywhere in the house and not just at the stove. Leave if you hear a hiss near the range or down in the basement. Leave if anyone has a headache, feels nauseated, or gets dizzy. If the smell is in the basement near the water heater or furnace, that's a different problem than a stove burner, and it's still a reason to walk out. Take the pets. Leave the door open behind you if you can manage it without touching a switch, then stand well away from the house. Call the gas utility from there. They come out for this and they don't charge you to check.
Utility First, Us Second
The gas company handles the line coming into your home, the meter, and the shutoff. They'll tell you whether gas is leaking and where it's coming from. If the leak turns out to be inside your range or oven, say a bad valve, a cracked igniter assembly, or a burner that won't light, they may shut gas off to that appliance and tag it. Smells That Aren't Actually Gas
A brand-new oven usually smells odd the first few times it heats up. That's oil burning off the metal. Run it empty at a moderate temperature with a window cracked and it goes away. Grease spilled under a burner turns sour when it heats, and so does a self-clean cycle. In an older Midwest kitchen, a musty basement draft can drift up through a floor gap near the gas line and smell strange without being gas at all. Still, natural gas is odorized to smell like rotten eggs. If that's what you're smelling, treat it as gas and call the utility. Guessing wrong costs too much.

Can I still use my other burners if only one smells?
No. Shut the whole range down until someone confirms where the gas is coming from. One burner valve failing doesn't mean the rest are fine, and you don't want an open flame anywhere nearby while you figure it out.
Should I shut off the gas valve behind my stove myself?
Only if you can reach it easily without moving the range and the smell is mild. If you'd have to pull the appliance out or crawl in behind it, leave it be and let the utility handle the shutoff.
How long should I air out the kitchen?
Give it fifteen to twenty minutes with the windows open and the burners off. If the smell is gone and stays gone, it was probably unlit gas from a knob. If it comes back, stop using the range and call.
