When the Ice Maker Goes Quiet

What an empty bin is actually telling you
An ice maker needs cold, water, and a signal to cycle. Take any one away and cubes stop, so the empty bin is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Feel the ice that's left. Hollow, shrunken cubes usually mean water pressure dropped off. A solid block frozen together means the unit made ice, then it melted and refroze, often from a door left ajar or a defrost problem. No ice at all with a bone-dry mold points at water never arriving. Each clue sends us down a different path, which saves guessing later. Note what you see before you touch anything.
The cheap stuff first: switches, doors, and fill tubes
Check the on/off control. Many models have a wire arm, a paddle, or a menu toggle that gets bumped during a grocery run, and kids and cleaning crews find those buttons reliably. Next, make sure the bin is seated all the way in. Some units won't cycle if the bucket sits a half inch out of place. Then look at the freezer door gasket. A carton or a bag of peas propping the door open lets warm, humid air in and the maker stalls. Last, check the fill tube at the back of the mold for a plug of ice. A cup of warm water poured slowly will clear a small one.
Water supply and filters: the middle tier
Around here, hard water is the usual villain. Scale builds inside the water line and the inlet valve screen, flow drops, and the mold only fills halfway. That's your hollow cube. Filters matter too. A clogged filter starves the maker long before it changes how the drinking water tastes, so replace it on the schedule in your manual. Follow the line back to the shutoff valve, usually under the sink or behind the fridge. A partly closed valve after someone worked on plumbing is common. In an unheated basement or a garage fridge, a freeze-thaw cycle can pinch that copper or plastic line closed.
Temperature and the parts that wear out
Ice needs a freezer near zero degrees Fahrenheit. Warmer than about ten degrees and the harvest cycle drags or never finishes. Check the setting, then look at the vents inside the freezer for boxes blocking airflow. Dusty condenser coils under or behind the fridge make the whole cabinet run warm, and a vacuum brush helps. Past that you're into parts that fail with age, like the water inlet valve, the mold thermostat, the ejector motor, and the control board. Those need testing, not swapping. If your fridge is over ten years old and everything else checks out, wear is a fair bet.

How long should I wait after resetting before I expect ice?
Give it 24 hours. Most makers produce a batch every one to three hours, but a freezer that warmed up has to recover first. Bin still empty the next day? Something else is wrong.
Could a new water filter be the problem instead of the fix?
Yes. An off-brand or improperly seated filter can restrict flow or trap air. Reseat it firmly, then run a couple of gallons through the dispenser to purge the air before you judge the ice maker.
My ice tastes stale but it's still making cubes. Same issue?
Different issue. Stale ice usually means old cubes absorbing freezer odors, or a filter past due. Dump the bin, replace the filter, and keep strong-smelling food sealed. Cubes should taste clean within a day.
